Pioneers

Settling in at Birdsview

Next morning they resumed the last lap of their journey to Birdsview Landing. As they reached the landing, the Savages came across in their canoe, whooping and hollering all the way. Archie and Jim were actually seeing their cousins for the first time.

The above photo is probably pretty close to what it looked like for the Boyd and Savage families during the early days of pioneering Skagit County. The George Savage family had already been in the Birdsview area since 1878 and were pretty thrilled to have family move close by. [photo from the Darius Kinsey Collection]. The photo below shows Bert Savage; probably one of the Savage cousins meeting Alex, Archie and Jim for the first time that day in October 1882.

The girls are, left to right: Rita Savage, Alice Sherwood, Dorothy Savage, and Alta Savage. Photo is from Barb Thompson (granddaughter of Bert, daughter of Dorothy) and can also be found in the pictorial book "The Skagit Collection", published by the Skagit Valley Herald.
